New setback for UAE after losing UN organization presidency elections

The United Arab Emirates suffered a new setback in international forums with the loss of the elections of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) of the United Nations.

The loss came despite the fact that the UAE regime has striven to secure the victory of its candidate for office in an effort to improve the image of the state and cover up its violations at home and abroad.

Italy’s Salvatore Siaccitano was elected president of the world body and will begin his duties on January 1, 2020.

Members of the ICAO Council met yesterday in Montreal, Canada, to elect a new president from among three candidates.

The UAE has striven to head the organization over the nomination of Aisha al-Hamli, where the UAE state media have promoted the strength of their chances of holding the position.

However, ICAO member states have refused to preside over the organization, especially given its black human rights record internally and its involvement in war crimes in Yemen, Libya and other countries.

Siaxitano overtook Hamli by six votes in the vote, which was voted on by 36 countries.

It is noteworthy that Hamli’s loss came after the publication of the news of the United Arab Emirates news of winning the presidency of the organization, 24 hours before the elections, which raised questions about the integrity of the elections.

The UAE is accused of using illegal methods when competing against its citizens in international elections, most recently at the end of September, when the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) ruled out a candidate for vice president, Ahmed Al Kamali, for violating integrity laws.

After losing, the General Authority of Civil Aviation of the United Arab Emirates congratulated Siaccitano on his election to the presidency of the International Organization for three years.

ICAO has 193 Member States and the Board of Directors is composed of only 36 States whose representatives elect the next President of the Organization.

ICAO is a specialized United Nations agency established by States in 1944 to manage and regulate the Convention on International Civil Aviation (Chicago Convention).

The International Organization plays a key role in the safety and security of air navigation, as well as in combating climate change.

ICAO is working with Member States of the Convention to comply with international norms and recommendations concerning international civil aviation and policies to support the international civil aviation sector.
