The sources said that the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Mohammed bin Zayed, had mobilized all communication channels with the Egyptian regime to pressure to thwart the Egyptian-Turkish rapprochement.
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu announced contacts with Egypt at the intelligence and diplomatic levels.
On the other hand, Egyptian sources stated that Turkey has conducted diplomatic contacts with Egypt and is looking forward to expanding cooperation between the two countries after estrangement years.
The sources mentioned that Turkey had proposed a meeting with the Egyptian side to discuss cooperation between the two countries but made it clear that the contacts are still in the preliminary stages.
In light of these developments, the UAE intensified its pressure on Egypt to cancel any rapprochement with Turkey in light of Abu Dhabi’s position against Ankara.
According to sources, Emirati intelligence and diplomatic leaders incited senior Egyptian officials to thwart rapprochement with Turkey.
The sources pointed out that the UAE was the one that pushed the Egyptian regime to set impossible conditions for rapprochement with Turkey.
For its part, the Egyptian regime sought to blackmail the UAE to obtain more financial support from Abu Dhabi.
The Egyptian regime branded the file of Turkish investments in Egypt, which was not affected much by the two countries’ tense political relations, especially since the Egyptian and Turkish regimes gave the two countries’ investors the green light to develop relations without restrictions since 2016.
The Emirati-Egyptian contacts cannot be predicted on the extent of their positiveness because of each party’s conditions and determinants and its strategic requirements and the conditions and requirements of other countries, especially the Emirates.
The sources emphasized that the Emirati position in recent discussions with Egypt on contacts with Turkey “is trying to slow down the pace of understandings that Turkey hopes to be quick.”
This is by proposing various possibilities for Turkey to benefit from “repositioning it in the region and improving its regional relations” without radically withdrawing itself from Libya, Syria and Iraq.
The sources indicated that the Emirati trend is more radical against Turkey than Saudi Arabia, which received positive statements from Turkey as well.
