British academic on the UAE… a country of human rights violations

A British researcher attacked the UAE and said that its crimes and violations of human rights are numerous within its territories and neighbouring countries.

Researcher Matthew Hedges, who was arrested by the UAE for several months, criticized the description of his country’s foreign minister, Dominic Rap, when he said that “the UAE is a true friend of the United Kingdom.”

The British praise for the UAE came against the backdrop of its donation to the United Kingdom of personal protective equipment necessary to tackle the Coronavirus.

“The United Arab Emirates is not a true friend, Mr. Rap,” Hedges wrote in his letter to the British newspaper, The Guardian.

“The UK government is happy to ignore the terrible human rights violations by regimes like the United Arab Emirates,” Hedges said.

The UAE authorities arrested the author of the letter for about seven months in solitary confinement, and falsely accused him of spying for the British government, which did little to help release him.

He added: The Foreign Minister must press for the release of the British citizens who are being held arbitrarily in the UAE, and to stop the escalation in Libya and Yemen before choosing to thank the United Arab Emirates without thinking.

“It is also of concern that although the United Arab Emirates clearly opposes the UK’s objectives in the conflicts in Libya and Yemen, the Foreign Minister believes that the UAE is a valuable partner in the same diplomatic interests,” he added.

Hedges criticized his country’s position on its citizens abroad, saying, “It appears that the United Kingdom government not only appreciates the lives of the British abroad, but is happy to ignore the terrible human rights violations by regimes like the UAE, in order to divert attention from its failures during a global epidemic.”

The British writer emphasized the role of the Foreign Minister by pressing for the release of the arbitrarily detained British citizens in the UAE, and to stop the escalation in Libya and Yemen before choosing to thank the United Arab Emirates without thinking.
