ICBU: Arbitrary detention threatens the arrivals to the Emirates
The International Campaign for the Boycott of the Emirates (ICBU) said that visitors to the UAE and Dubai in particular should pay attention to the dangers of possible arbitrary detention on various backgrounds, including activity on social media.
The Paris-based international campaign urged investors, businessmen and visitors wishing to participate in the World Expo 2020 in Dubai to think well before heading to the UAE, fearing they would be arrested.
The campaign highlighted that detention for tweets on Twitter and other social media sites is common in the UAE, which prohibits the expression of opinions publicly and has imprisoned and dozens are still on the background of that of its citizens and expatriates.
The campaign pointed out that the UAE imposes severe restrictions on the internet, especially social media such as Facebook and WhatsApp, and it spies on a large scale through those networks.
The campaign drew attention to many cases of arbitrary detention practiced by the UAE in recent years against the background of public expression of opinions, most notably for prominent human rights activist Ahmed Mansour, well-known lawyer Muhammad al-Roken, British academic Matthew Hedges, and others.
The international campaign also warned of the dangers of being arrested in the UAE on the background of drinking alcohol and exercising personal freedoms, as well as imprisoning investors or using them as scapegoats for the local residents who coveted the ownership of foreign companies operating in the country.
The campaign stressed that Dubai is one of the most dangerous countries in the world to invest, as foreign investors are subjected to abuse, theft, imprisonment or placing them on Interpol statements so that local citizens can steal their assets and companies.
It is noteworthy that the international campaign to boycott the Emirates was launched in 2017 in light of the endless violations of human rights practiced by the UAE, in addition to the war crimes committed in Yemen and violations of the rights of workers, in addition to the fact that the UAE is the center of modern slavery.
