Social media users wondered what hope the UAE is talking about launching a rocket to Mars, while Yemen’s children are being killed? In reference to Abu Dhabi’s crimes against Yemeni civilians.

The UAE launched its first flight to Mars yesterday, the unmanned Probe of Hope from the Tanegashima Space Center in Japan, on a seven-month trip to the Red Planet, where it will revolve around it and send data about its atmosphere.

The probe was initially scheduled to be launched on July 14, but bad weather delayed the launch twice.

Just over an hour after its launch, the probe deployed solar panels to operate its systems and established radio communications with the mission on the ground.

Sarah Al-Amiri, Minister of State for Advanced Sciences in the Emirates, said that her country’s mission to Mars cost $200 million. The mission aims to provide a complete picture of the atmosphere of Mars, by preparing a daily and quarterly study of the changes that occur to it.

The UAE announced its mission plans for the first time in 2014, and launched a national space program in 2017 to develop local expertise in this field.

The UAE, home to 9.4 million people, most of whom are foreign workers, lacks the scientific and industrial base for the major space-faring countries. The UAE has a “plan” to establish a human settlement on Mars by 2117.
