The New Arab: Mohammed bin Zayed is putting pressure on the Sudanese military to normalize relations with Israel

The New Arab newspaper confirmed that the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, the de facto ruler of the UAE, is pressuring Sudan to normalize relations with Israel, taking advantage of the economic crisis.

The newspaper stated that Mohammed bin Zayed is exerting unremitting efforts to help US President Donald Trump drag many Arab countries to normalizing relations with Israel ahead of the US elections scheduled next November.

Sudanese diplomat sources said that the UAE and Saudi Arabia are exerting significant pressure on decision-makers in Khartoum to join the train of normalization, despite the reluctance of the Sudanese elite and people.

The sources revealed that Abu Dhabi and Riyadh are trying to take advantage of the severe economic crisis that is sweeping Sudan, and the torrential disaster that caused the displacement of about one million Sudanese to put pressure on the government and the Sovereignty Council to normalize relations with the Israeli occupation.

The sources explained that during unannounced contacts, Sudanese Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok confirmed his inability to participate in that step, because his government is not authorized to take such fateful decisions, and that it is closer to a crisis government or a transitional government, and that the Sovereignty Council can decide such a measure. It is the same position that was announced during the visit of US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to Khartoum last August.

The sources pointed out that “Hamdok is evading, knowing the extent of the Sudanese street’s rejection of normalization with Israel, and realizing that a move like this is capable of triggering a new revolution, in a situation of crisis by nature.”

The same sources said, “The Emirati side has decided the approval of the most powerful man in the Sovereignty Council, who is (Deputy Chairman of the Sovereignty Council) Commander of the Rapid Support Forces, Muhammad Hamdan Dagalo, famously known as Hamidati, on the normalization step.

The sources indicated that Hemedti alone cannot pass the decision and called on Abu Dhabi to pressure the Chairman of the Sovereignty Council, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, to extract his approval to join the UAE-Bahrain agreement. The sources revealed that Abu Dhabi invited Burhan to visit the UAE during the next few days to resolve the matter.

The sources pointed out that the Al-Burhan, in general, does not oppose that step, in light of the tremendous financial and economic support that his country will receive that may reduce the severity of the crisis and lower the rate of inflation.

“The Al-Burhan does not mind, but he specified one condition, which is that Saudi Arabia announces his normalization agreement with Israel. He stresses that Khartoum will formally join the agreement in case the declaration is bilateral and that the kingdom’s name precedes Sudan’s name in the declaration’s statement, because that It will contribute to absorbing the shock of the decision in front of the Sudanese people.”

Trump had said that he expected 5 or 6 Arab countries to join normalization with Israel, after indicating the start of consultations with it. He stressed that “Saudi Arabia will join the Emirati, Israeli, Bahraini agreement at the appropriate time.”

On Thursday, White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows reiterated that “five countries” are seriously considering concluding normalization agreements with Israel, without specifying them.

A source in the Mauritanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs had recently denied that his country is “on the verge of normalization with Israel.” In contrast, other Mauritanian sources revealed pressure exerted on President Mohamed Ould Al-Ghazwani to catch up with normalization with Israel.
