Pakistan: the UAE lies about mediating between Islamabad and New Delhi

101

Pakistan refuted what the UAE announced regarding its mediation in the dispute between Islamabad and New Delhi, dealing an embarrassing blow to Abu Dhabi’s efforts to play the role of a regional peace broker.

Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said that his country and India had not participated in any “peace talks” and that the UAE was not playing a mediating role.

“We are not conducting any peace talks with India at the moment, and the UAE is not mediating anything,” Qureshi added.

Qureshi stated that “Pakistan has never moved away from dialogue, while India has moved away, and has taken certain steps that spoil the peaceful climate.”

Pakistan suspended its diplomatic and trade relations with India in 2019 after New Delhi cancelled the special status of the section of Kashmir under its control.

In February 2021, the two nuclear powers committed themselves to end violations of the ceasefire in effect since 2003 at the disputed borders in Kashmir, after months of intense tension.

The Emirati ambassador to Washington, Yusef Al-Otaiba, said last week that his country plays a role “in reducing tension in Kashmir” and respecting the ceasefire.

Al-Otaiba claimed in an Internet conference organized by the “Hoover Institute” of Stanford University in the United States. “It is not required that you (New Delhi and Islamabad) become close friends, but we want to reach at least a practical and effective level, a level at which they talk. This is our goal.”

Kashmir has been divided between the two neighbours since their independence from Britain and secession in 1947. The dispute over the region was the cause of two of the three wars between them.

Relations between India and Pakistan are still tepid. Still, recent signs of rapprochement have been observed, such as the exchange of letters between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Imran Khan, calling to establish peaceful relations.

Observers are unanimous in linking the UAE’s claim to mediate between India and Pakistan and Abu Dhabi’s ambitions in the South Asian region and gaining regional influence.

According to observers, the UAE aims to gain influence in South Asia and show it a peaceful face regarding its involvement in wars and military interventions.

The UAE previously encountered resistance when the idea of a bilateral dialogue was raised, and public discourse in Pakistan, in particular, became utterly hostile to the UAE.
