Concerns arise in the UAE regarding a decline in relations with Washington due to human rights violations

An Emirati source said that the ruling regime fears a deterioration in relations with the United States due to human rights violations in the country.

The source mentioned Emirates Leaks that the UAE regime has begun preparing plans to whitewash its reputation and cover its grave violations.

The source pointed out that the plans include intensifying contracting with lobbyists in the United States and public relations companies.

This comes in light of the strong condemnation of the annual U.S. State Department report of human rights violations in the UAE.

“We will use all the tools of our diplomacy to defend human rights and hold accountable those who commit violations,” said U.S. Foreign Minister Anthony Blinken while presenting his ministry’s annual report on the human rights situation in the world.

Blinken confirmed that President Joe Biden’s administration would reject “human rights violations wherever they occur and without concern that those responsible are opponents or partners.”

The U.S. State Department’s 2020 report on human rights in the world documented systematic violations of human rights and lawbreaking in the UAE.

The annual report highlighted a series of violations of the UAE regime, including arbitrary detention, ill-treatment of prisoners of conscience, and discrimination between expatriate citizens.

The report pointed to the widespread use of torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment in UAE prisons.

The report said that the UAE constitution prohibits such practices, but there were some reports of their occurrence over the past year.

Based on testimonies of released prisoners, their family members, diplomatic observers, and human rights organizations, U.N. human rights experts believe that some individuals imprisoned on suspicion of violations of state and non-governmental security have been tortured or ill-treated.
